TICKLEBEAR's 12 of 12 (MONTREAL, CANADA) SEPTEMBER 2009

oh darn!!!
this is only my second "12 of 12",
& i'm already infringing on chad darnell's rules,
as i seem to have editing problems.
but perhaps i'll be forgiven,
as i'm talking about my hometown,
montreal,
or rather a very specific district,
a very small portion of the city
but one of its prized jewels.
i love montreal
for its cosmopolitan way of life,
its european charm
& modern lifestyle.
it just has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi.
oui, oui!!
entry # 1:
the vision i get every morning,
but never the same.
& its never ending renovations...
the park adjacent to the chateau ramezay.

a monument to jacques cartier,
with a bird standing on his head...
serves him right!!!
:D~

entry #2:
an old house on notre-dame street.
just showing you the old bones of the city.

entry #3:
nice to see such buildings survived.
entry #4:
the marguerite bourgeois church & museum.
don't forget that montreal was first a french colony,
founded by samuel de champlain in 1605,
with the agreement of the french king & the vatican...
oy!!!
it was then known as ville-marie,
dedicated to the virgin marie.
yeah,
like the virgin needed something else bearing her name!!
:D~
we became english property in 1760...
oh well!!
we are most fortunate to be able to enjoy the riverside.
if you look to the right,
you'll see sainte-helene's island,
which once was the site for the universal exposition,
& still has on its grounds the amusement park la ronde,
now managed by six flags.
oh, the memories of my youth!!
yes, i was there.
yes, i'm that old!!!
shut up!!!
:D~

entry #5:
a piece of heritage of our maritime tradition,
in the old port of montreal.
looking toward la cite du havre.
wasn't this a splendid day to do this 12 of 12?!?
it sure was!!
:)~
entry #6:
the bonsecour park,
where people get to enjoy many activities,
whether it'd be summer or winter,
& a few celebrations as well.
a most relaxing spot the rest of the time...
:)~

entry #7:
boats anchored at the old harbor.
i told you we have an old maritime tradition,
among others.
railroads are another tradition
as they can be seen throughout the city,
showing how much business was vital in montreal,
sitting at the crossroads between europe
& the rest of the american continent,
due to its position along the saint-lawrence river.
my grandfather worked for the canadian national,
one of the two major railroad companies we had here in canada.
i'm still nostalgic
when i hear the trains going by
& blowing their horn.
but i hate travelling in those.
the motion always makes me sick...

entry #8:
the contrast between the old & the new.
sometimes it's good,
sometimes not.
this ain't bad!!
entry #9:
the charm of the old.

entry #10:
the modernism imposing itself above the rest.

entry #11:
the bells were ringing when i took this picture.
i'm surprised the pic is not blurry,
given the vibration...
quite deafening,
if you ask me!!

entry #12:
just look at the craftmanship!!
to think that some people do this for a living,
i can only bow in front of their talent,
& am grateful that there are still such people
that beautify our world.
this is not just four walls & a roof,
it is a piece of art.
:)~
this one was just too cute to pass up,
as i was walking back home.
yes,
i live somewhat at proximity to all of this gorgeousness.
so this is this month's 12 of 12,
and then some...
mea culpa,
mea culpa,
mea maxima culpa!!
i don't deal with guilt trips too well...
heck!!
it's my blog,
& i was showing you only a tiny bit of my city.
this is nothing!!
there is so much more to see & do,
just in that district alone!!!
but i tried to focus on the architecture this time.
also,
i had another editing dilemma...
color or black & white shots?!?
you've seen the colored version;
below,
you'll find the black & white slideshow if that's more to your liking.
i felt that while some pics looked better in their original version,
some just looked better in black & white,
a more classical approach
to enhance details
rather than be distracted by the color aspect.
i'll try to behave next month.
already have an idea
as to what it might pertained to.
it has to do with montreal,
obviously,
but in a certain setting.
see you all then!!
i'll make you fall in love with montreal,
if i can!!!

this is my hometown after all. wouldn't want to shame it, you know...
next month will be another angle on the city, in a different location, if all goes well.

You can break the rules as often as you like as far as I'm concerned, all those photos of Montreal are gorgeous, thanks so much they have brightened up my morning :)

@ pete:
if this is all that was needed to brighten your morning, it was simple enough. glad you enjoyed!!

I remember some of those places! I was up there for a conference a couple of years ago ... in November. I remember it being bitter cold -- looks much nicer when it's warm :)

That was also the trip where I discovered that I can't fake my way in French.

I'm with Pete: more rule breaking, please!

Yep!

Bravo!

@ chris:
november is not usually the harshest month here. unfortunate timing, i guess... i don't advise you to try january or february!! unless you're properly dressed, like we do.
as for french, we could always teach you a few well-chosen swear words & you'd sound "local"!!
:D~
french is not easy to master but it's worth it.

What STUNNING photos! Leave it to a fellow aries to ignore the 12 photos max rule. I don't think I have ever posted only 12.

But back to your photos...amazing. I have always heard that Montreal is gorgeous, but your photos prove it. Even someone like me with ADD couldn't turn away. Amazing. :)

I'm so glad you joined in on the 12 of 12 fun. I can't wait to see what you post next month. Cheers to you!

if i've joined chad darnell's 12 of 12, it's all thanks to you as your the source of my inspiration.
i'm pretty pleased, for an amateur, of my two first entries. lokking forward to my third. i already have my themes for the next 3 months. i don't know what each day will bring, but i've already figured out what i aim for. we shall see!! as for montreal, it can be quaint, even seedy at times, but it still has its glorious spots, here & there, each with its own virtues. more to come!! thanx 4 dropping by!! always appreciated & motivating to continue my quest in the blogosphere!!

OMG, thank you so much for giving me a glimpse of your beautiful city. Your pictures are wonderful. I'm glad you're thinking in themes...I tend to do the same thing with my 12 of 12. Thanks for visiting mine. I must, must find a way to visit Montreal.

TICKLEBEAR said...

@ sunny:
i've added you on the blogroll of this blog as you're an inspiration. everyone should see something beautiful at least once a day, & you have the eye to capture it, that & a good camera, i warrant. i love how you set things up on your blog & the way you treat each picture. should you come to montreal, don't forget your camera, you'll have a field day here!!!

I think everyone posts extra photos from time to time, though you may win the prize for most photos in a 12 of 12!

You had some beautiful weather to show off your beautiful city - those are really wonderful photos, and show just how much you love your city! I'd really love to see it myself one day and see the architecture first hand - maybe even meet up with you for a coffee (this may be well in the future lol, my pay doesn't allow me big trips right now).

Thanks!

Sorry I’m late in replying! I only got my own 12 of 12 up at 1:30am yesterday!

dear helen, there is no expiration date to reply. no worry about that.
as for visiting montreal, should you ever get the opportunity, let me know & i'll point you in the right direction, stepping away from the obvious tourist traps & see montreal as we do.

about my 12 of 12, i didn't mean to beat a record, but there's so much to see/show, it was hard to edit down. would you believe i had more?!? i'll behave next time, perhaps...
now off to see yours!!
