hey folks!!!
this is my fifth participation to CHAD DARNELL's 12 of 12 project.
since i usually use a thematic,
this one is a bit ambivalent...
but i wish to dedicate this post to GAIA,
the good old planet earth we live on.
with the summit going on in copenhagen,
with the world leaders deciding the fate of the humankind and this planet,
canadians being represented by stephen harper,
the canadian prime minister
and leader of the conservative party,
the worst people you can find to discuss environment issues
as they have "friends" in the circles of the oil industry.
would you trust these guys?
about 80% of the population don't,
and they barely hang on to power by the skin of their teeth.
unfortunately,
at these times of important decisions,
they are the ones making our [or rather theirs] policies.

this day saw in montreal a few manifestations of those montrealers
who care about this planet
and stood in solidarity with other citizens of this world.
you can follow various events through AVAAZ.ORG,
one of my main sources of informations on these matters.
over 3000 events occured today throughout the planet.
while some people opted to willingly participate in the triviality
of christmas-related consumerism,
though xmas does have its charms...
others chose to speak out against the apathy of our government,
and the need for drastic measure
in order to save our planet.
it is certainly a good thing
to take a good hard look at our living habits,
and recycle and make the green turn,
but it is also as important to tell the elcted ones that lead us
about our will for change in these dire times.
one cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening,
therefore,
every gesture count,
starting with this manifestation this afternoon at phillip's square,
where families and individuals gathered
to tell our government to take sterner measures
than it's willing to take
in order to protect their "friends"
instead of this planet...
just right for the occasion.
they're a riot!!
:D~
for a change...
vigils happened here and there.
here,
some brave folks faced the cold weather again at phillip's square...
of the McGill university,
demonstrating to get THE REAL DEAL from our representatives
and others from around the world.
here's hoping!!!
and i'm back home,
getting ready to upload my pictures.
while others stand in the cold for a cause.
but that's just me!!
i don't stand, i report...
sorry!!
but perhaps i ought to remember to water my own plants for starters...
off to it now!!!

i love both of the designs of those illuminated trees but i always have a bad conscience as it really is a waste of electricity... have a nice christmas time! eliane from the very sunny green island eliane
T - you are awesome! I loved your commentary on the day - protesters and the need to water your plants. Priceless!
Not sure if your title photos is new (new since last month, right?), but it and the other photo with the "electric light" effect is very cool.
Happy Holidays!! See ya in 2010.
Cheers,
Jill
@ eliane zimmerman:
i'm with you on the energy consumption, but these led lights use less energy than the traditional ones, i think...
personally, i keep a low profile as far as these things go. i do decorate but it doesn't involve much electricity nor much space.
now, do you understand my ambivalent feelings? between the xmas fever with all of its excesses, and the fight for the survival of this planet. couldn't find two ideas more opposed to one another.
:D~
season's greetings!!

Yes, we have the LED lights, too -- I know they use less power, but I don't think they're as pretty as the other kind.
Interesting to see all of the protesters in Montreal -- Austin is supposed to be such an activist city, but no one here seems to be talking much about the Copenhagen conference at all. It's very ironic.
Nice 12!
@ jill:
i like to change my blog's header on occasion. gives it a seasonal look.
as for my commentary, i thought it was a bit ironic that i'd like to save the planet, but i'm hard put to remember the bit of greenery i maintain at home...
:D~
happy holidays!!

@ chris:
well, here in quebec, the environment, as pretty much everything else, is a point of contention between the federal and provincial governments as we have quite different views on the issue and diverging policies. we are more "green", even if not everyone here embraces it, it is gaining momentum. the afternoon rally had a good crowd, but the vigils at night were...discreet?!? i would have hope for a stronger presence, but every gesture counts!! i thought these people were brave to stand there in the cold for a cause.
if i may dare a comment about the lack of interest in texas for the summit copenhagen: the strong presence of the oil industry in your state could be a factor...
i'm just saying.
thanks for dropping by!!

Sorry I missed you last month....life got in the way of comments. As always, I enjoyed your view of the day. Take care, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
I like Christmas lights, and I like celebrating it, so I think it must be possible to do both that and make a green point to the politicians. I try to keep my energy usage down, but I live in a house where 2 people want the heating on high all the time. I'm scared for the bills...
Thanks for showing me Montreal at Christmas!
@ sunny archibald:
thank you m'ame!!
i know about LIFE...
no problem!!
the internet is what keeps me sane in regards to LIFE's preoccupations.
:)~
enjoy your holidays too,
you and all your loved ones!!

@ dogeared:
i wouldn't agree with them, as i shut off the heating, and opened the patio door, even if it's below the freezing point, much to the pleasure of my kitty. it is after all her first winter. you should have seen her during the snowstorm!!!
as for this month's theme, the original one would have been all of the xmas decorations in the downtown district, but in the light of the current event, i opted to change it, as i felt it was more important.
happy holidays!!

Watering your houseplants is a good start! I remembered to put the recycling out (in the bin) today...next challenge will be remembering to put the bin out on collection day!
@ bec:
recycling comes more naturally to me than watering the damn plants... it seems something always more important comes up...
:D~
Hé,hé,hé!! Ainsi est l'humain... un être de contradiction! Manifester pour la planète sous les lumières de Noël!
My, my! C'est plus qu'un 12 of 12, c'est un reportage!
Toujours intéressant! ;¬)
@ la bloggia:
ma premiere idee etait de feature les lumieres de nouelle au centre-ville en valeur. mais avec les manifs, j'ai change d'idee, tout en montrant un ti-peu des deux.
