VANCOUVER 2010- SNIFF!!!! IT'S OVER....

the canadian motto will be no longer
"from coast to coast",
but
"from gold to gold",
as medals were won by our countrymen
spreading across this nation.

the VANCOUVER WINTER OLYPICS 2010 are over.
SNIFF!!!
these olympics have been a sobering experience,
starting with NODAR's death....
among other calamities.
but it has also ignited the pride of a nation,
basically known for its politeness and its low profile.
the world now knows we love our athletes!!!
does it mean "OWN THE PODIUM" did its job?
if it weren't for the mediatic spin on things,
putting undue pressure on our athletes,
i would say yes,
as it is high time
we invest in our athletes,
giving canada some credibility.
we may not be the country with the most medals,
but we are the one with the most gold medals,
the canadian national anthem still resonating across the land.

i may have been impressed with the games at LILLEHAMMER,
but VANCOUVER proved to be the best games ever.
call me chauvinistic if you want.
my deepest thanks to the first nations
and to the british columbians
who have so kindly open their arms to the world
to celebrate one of the best events of this world,
where we, as one species, unite
to celebrate the best among us.

these olympics will remain engrave in my mind, my heart, my soul.
GO CANADA, GO!!!
we are indeed the best country in the whole wide world.

since i'm almost half a century old...
i've seen many [winter and summer] olympic games,
but all i can say is:

SEPIA SATURDAY (1)

this is my mom,
at a family picnic on the beach.
i don't know the exact time or location,
but it could be at Le Bic, Metis Beach or Sainte-Flavie,
in the lower saint-lawrence region,
here in quebec.

i was inspired by TONY's blog,
as he's a regular with SEPIA SATURDAY,
always with some funny/interesting anecdote.
i don't have such,
ignoring my family history
and estranged from most of them,
not having seen them for the last 25-30-35 years even...
that's the way i was raised.
too bad!!
but i've got a bunch of pictures
as i've had to clean up
after the only uncle i knew somewhat well
passed away at the hospital where i work.
i looked after him,
until his last breath,
then looked after his things.
i did the same for my mom.
my dad is out of his home,
living now at an old folks' home,
but he's got all of his family albums,
after i reorganized all of them.
they were a mess but now are pretty to look at.
the only problem is...
my father is blind now.

i will not officially participate in the project,
as i have very little info to provide with these pictures,
if any at all.
i find it somewhat embarassing,
but if you want,
you can check out the official blog connecting every participant,
and maybe,
add your own two-cents,
if you're so inclined.

i personally will carry this on here,
but featuring pictures dating back to various decades,
some perhaps even from the 90s,
if i deem it appropriate,
as i can tell only my own history...
let's just say
i will be doing this very loosely.
i just find it fun and interesting
and a good way to prolong the life of those documents
that tend to fade away with time.
and a bit of nostalgia can't hurt the soul.

went to bed around 10:00 pm,
got up just past 2 am...
watched the olympic recaps on tv
while fiddling with a few things on the computer.
typical!!
captured the "sunrise"
and went back to bed.
fortunately was able to catch some ZZZZZZZZs.
back to watching the olympics,
still fiddling on the computer,
obviously!!!
i'm writing this!!!
a gray day,
but the mind is full of ideas...
i'd need like 10 pairs of arms and as many PCs
to do everything.

VANCOUVER 2010: THE SNOW LEOPARD OF GHANA !!!!

Kwame Nkrumah Acheampong,
better known as the "SNOW LEOPARD",
made quite an impression on canadians
as a pionner
since he's the first athlete of GHANA at the winter olympics.
he doesn't currently live in ghana,
but rather in england,
while still representing his country,
though not officially endorsed by the government.
ghana is not quite what you think of when you think of winter sports,
and yet,
he wishes to promote winter sports in his country.
quite the dreamer,
and that endeared him to canadians' heart.
we just love stories like that.

he got quite the ovation
as he entered the stadium
at the opening ceremonies.

make sure to watch him
at the slalom and the giant slalom
as this skier has ambitious dreams.
win or lose,
he'll have left his mark on the winter olympic experience.

VANCOUVER 2010: JOANNIE ROCHETTE HAS REACHED HER OLYMPIC DREAM

JOANNIE ROCHETTE,
despite adversity,
has reached for her olympic dream
and found it has a bronze lining.

if there was a show of emotions after the short program,
she showed an aplomb during the performance of her long program,
and earning herself a bronze medal for it.
to be frank,
i watched her performance with my fingers crossed,
and i sobbed in her stead
when she received her bronze medal.
she's done it!!!
she's now an olympic medallist!!!
congrats JOANNIE!!!
your strenght is an inspiration.
you've done yourself proud.
you've done your mom proud.
you've done us proud,
and we are all oh-so-very proud of you!!!

those make for fun times...

VANCOUVER 2010: I BELIEVED IN TESSA AND SCOTT AND THEY WON...THE GOLD MEDAL!!!

i had a good feeling about this
as i was pleased with TESSA VIRTUE and SCOTT MOIR
in the compulsory and their amazing performance
in the original program,
the tango and the flamenco worked for them.

tonight,
despite stiff competition i'll admit,
they have gone beyond themselves
to give us the ultimate performance
that gave them a definite lead in the points,
leaving no doubt they are now the best!!!
congrats to them!!
i believed in their abilities.
i believed it was their time.
i believed in them!!!!
for once that i'm right...
it'll be a short night for me
as i now get up in less than three hours...
but i'll sleep soundly.
they're the first north americans to win this medal,
and they're canadians,
in their homeland!!
gosh!!!
they must love their job right now...

VANCOUVER 2010: MY CONDOLEANCES, JOANNIE ROCHETTE.

the unthinkable has happened in the morning
as JOANNIE ROCHETTE's mother,
THERESE,
who had just arrived in vancouver to see
her daughter skate this week,
suffered a heart attack that proved fatale.

it has been reported that
she would nonetheless perform,
in homage to her mother,
who always proved to be her greatest supporter.
i think this is brave of her,
though i don't think
anyone would blame her should she decide otherwise.
these are the saddest circumstances you can go through,
and she has to go through it under public scrutiny.
again,
very brave of her.

even though i went to bed around 2 a.m.,
(olympics oblige...)
i was up by 6 o'clock,
(thanks to the cat...)
sweetly embraced by the wintery sunrise,
basking in its crisp light.
a tad rough on the retina if you ask me,
but i still welcomed the sight along with my first cup of coffee.

well,
ALEXANDRE BILODEAU no longer stands alone
as a golden canadian hero
at the VANCOUVER OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES 2010,
i'm happy to report.

MAELLE RICKER amazed us in the snowboard cross.

the exilarating race of CHRISTINE NESBITT earned her the gold.

CRAZY, just plain CRAZY,
but so great to watch!!!!

there were other amazing performances,
but from athletes of other countries,
so,
i'll just keep those to myself...

my next big hope resides with

in ice dancing.
they came in second last night
during the compulsory dance,
the tango romantico.
i believed in their performance.
they were focused, steady and just enjoying the moment.

another friday, another day off,
and i have monday off as well.
a good news for me.
a less interesting one is
that the city got a fresh coat of snow...
you all know by now
how i feel about that...
but it's mild,
so i guess it'll be a fine weekend.
busy week at work,
busy week at home,
watching the olympic games,
feeling disappointed in some regards,
and feeling elated on some other occasions.
it is inspirational to see young folks giving us their best performance.

is JANELLE's recovery from her coma
and her comeback in the blogsphere.
her ordeal with cancer was enough of a saga itself,
which was further complicated when she fell into a coma.
but resilient as she is,
(she did say before she would beat this),
to see her still alive and as resolute as ever,
she is herself an inspiration to others.
and i wish to dedicate this TGIF to celebrate her.
i don't think she's a fan of CELINE DION.
i know she doesn't speak french.
but by the time i'm through with her,
she'll have learn to appreciate french,
and perhaps CELINE as well...
