SEPIA SATURDAY (149)

This week on Sepia Saturday
Alan's prompt is pretty random in what it suggests:
a man, smoking a pipe, wearing a uniform and holding a turtle.
I dare not imagine all that will come out of this,
but I will keep somewhat on theme,
through a random research via Google and Tumblr
:)~

Pet: checked!!
Dressed to kill: checked!!
Pipe: checked!!

A lovely German CdV dating back to 1894.

Human: checked!!
Pet [bird or tonight's dinner...]: checked!!
Smoking: checked!!

A studio shot,
no info but with certainly a sense of humor...
:D~

Human: checked!!
Fancy earrings: checked!!
Smoking: checked!!

A magazine ad from 1955,
stating "a perfect balance of sunshine and moisture",
terms I personally prefer to be about a winery and their latest crop,
promising some good wine;
or something about corn fields
and my guarantee I'll be able to indulge into all of the pop corn I may ever want to eat.
:)~

A princess: checked!!
Pets: none visible but granted they must surely be around somewhere...
Casual chic: checked!!
Smoking: Oh yeah!!

Margaret, c. 1957.
I've seen her in more compromising situations...
;)~

Hunks: checked!!
Smoking: Hot!!

Erroll
bearing some resemblance to the guy in the prompt picture,
or is that the other way around?!?
Burt
my boyhood crush!!
Ewan and Sean.

Babes: checked!!
Smoking: Hot!!

The temptresses of the day
Bette, Marilyn [already in bed], and Sean [in Blade Runner, c. 1982].

More hunks: checked!!
Smoking: big ones!!

Sean, Scott, Joe and Mel in the Big Boys Club
enjoying a cigar.
One might think that the entertainment business is in cahoots with the tobacco industry
to sell us on the idea that smoking is glam...
I seem to remember when Telly Savalas [in Kojak, 1973-78] went from smoking to sucking on lollipops
after a ban was imposed on smoking on screen.
:/~

Twins: checked!!
Dressed to kill: checked!!
Smoking: still!!!

When I came across this,
I thought this was a keeper!!
Either these twins are 82 and proving smoking won't kill you;
or they're 22 and proving that smoking will ruin your looks...
:D~

This was my [random] journey this week.
Time to return to
If you want to see more personal pics of mine,
you can check out my old posts about my father
and me and my mother in my first official smoking pic.

Legitimate Sepians [only] can also gather on our Facebook group page
to exchange ideas and info.

As for me,
I'll just keep on collecting pics of me smoking,
likely until I vanish up in smoke...

Nasty habit!!
:(~

I don't have any vintage pics involving a turtle,
but I have this one I took a couple of years ago.
Just to come full circle with the prompt picture
You know?!?...
:D~

And for the grande finale
something out of the 1980s
Bye 4 Now!!

  1. Fun collection , Bruno. I think smoking did for Margaret in the end. It seems strange if you see many people smoking today. Flashing flesh - now that's another story.

    1. Mentalities change over time.
I don't hope for us to become Victorians,
      prude and all,
but some decency and self-respect wouldn't hurt,
      that's for sure.

  2. I had the same thought about the 22 year old twins who have smoked since they were the size of that kid up there with the chicken. I wonder who's weird sense of humor set that up. Nice photo of a turtle.

  3. As a reformed smoker of over fifty years, I now find pictures of smokers and smoking rather revolting. The kid with chicken looks as if he'll grow up to be a hard nut and would have snapped the fingers off anybody trying to take that fag away from him. The dog is something else, I'd love to meet his tailor and the pipe could suck on that as an accessory, but not for smoking.

    1. I did stop for 17 years and am appalled to have started again...
The dog and those twins are my pieces-de-resistance!!
      I found these most amusing.

  4. Oh you make me miss my pipe. It is about 8 years since I smoked it but I would happily take it up again tomorrow if it wasn't for those around me who would kill me. I have to say that my favourite of your collection is that photograph of the boy and the hen.

    1. It hardly surprises me that you'd go for the quirky.
You Brits have such a sense of humor, quite different from this side of the Pond...
It may be an interesting prop for a photo,
      but please don't start again.
Don't want to hear about you in the obituaries...

  5. I enjoyed your definition of "dressed to kill.' I agree smoking is a nasty habit, especially since I know it shortened the lives of two of my grandparents. I'm glad I never picked up the habit.

      Keep it smoke free!!
Your kids [and grandkids] will thank you for it.

  6. Great selection of smoking photos. My favorite is the twins. Something about them makes me think they're men or
is that too the result of too much tobacco? The wigs aren't quite right, the excessive jewelery and the makeup which looks unpractised, for lack of a better word. Hairy arms too. You caught the "watch" part of the theme with this one too..one of the twins seems to be wearing two watches and two identical rings, stacked. Very interesting post as always.

    1. Looking at it again, you have sown the seeds of doubt now.
They both have a frail frame,
but their hands seem failrly large,
not the delicate hands we see on a lady...
Maybe they worked hard their whole life?!?
My mom wore two watches for a while,
hers, and her mom's after her passing.
      Why? I don't know...
      T'was weird...

  7. Hi Bruno, what a fun post! Loved all the "Smokin' Hot" photos of everybody. That one of Sean Penn, a bit after his pot smoking days in Fast Times at Ridgemont High is cute. Your turtle picture is wonderful. I did have some of those that I took at the zoo a couple of years ago that I could have used, I suppose. Can't wait to check out the videos. Have a wonderful weekend.

  8. Oh dear Bruno you have me rolling, kicking, laughing beyond the limits a woman should laugh, ever even in private! You first had me with the dog and the hat! Love, love this photo- when I saw it on facebook already- I had to dog on over to see it! You are my first visit this morning too- and I do believe I always make all of your posts- unless you post really late! But my next fave, not including that cool video, are of the fine and lovely old lady twins, enjoying a SMOKE Don't they know it gives them extra lines on their faces! Oh yeah, they probably do!

    1. While I don't foresee temperance being a big thing in the future,
attitudes about drink binging and drunk driving is already changing somewhat,
but not as much as we'd hope for among the young ones, or so reports say,
and the statistics of young ones implicated in car accidents involving drunk driving.
Maybe one day, they'll come to their sense.

  11. Right - well I think you get the prize for funniest collection of photos this week. Not to mention videos. I won't be forgetting that Patsy Cline song in a hurry. Sitting down to sing...that's weird...a bit like the song really. LOVE that photo of Sean - it's my favourite. He is a hunk that's for sure.

    1. I'll see your father and a princess and raise you a grandfather and a queen!!!
      Queen trumps princess, I believe...
But I love your anecdote. A staring contest?!? With a princess? Wow!!
Grandpa got to shake hands with the Queen,
but I can't tell whether it was during George and Elizabeth's visit (1939),
      or Elizabeth and Phillip's (1951).
Grandpa had some role in the city and part of the officials who met with them.
I heard the story when I was still pretty young, hence the vagueness.
And my only connection to the Queen was this:

    2. "I can't speak from experience as I've never tried smoking a pipe."

I was referring to the fact that the gentleman looks a great deal like one of those dogs whose lips don't seal, which means that they find it difficult to hold saliva in their mouths, which means that they slobber a little. Well, if you can't hold slobber, you can't hold smoke, whether pipe, joint, cigar, or cigarette.

  17. I just had the chance to watch the videos. The three cigarettes is hilarious. Also I looked at the twins again and I can see some kind of netting behind their heads. Could they possibly have had more hair hanging/arranged at the back or what? Veils? Could they be twin smoking cross dresser brides? As if they aren't already unique enough.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Looks too flat to be some kind of netting and a little too neat for ribbons.
A kind of mantillas, without the full headgear?
I found them amusing but the more I look at them, the stranger they get.
I submitted that pic to google image to see if I could find someone who had posted this
and provided more info, but found none... Pity!! It might have answered many question.
"Twin smoking cross dresser brides?" That would be a find beyond even my wildest dreams!!
I don't think I could date a guy like that, but it would certainly spark some interesting conversation.

    1. Well, she does refer to a stranger, in her song. Gives him the stalker look,
or just you're typical one-night stand... hence the 3 cigarettes!!
That was bad editing from the uploader in that video and I didn't edit it.
This was an advertisement from the '80s for Turtles Chocolates. Good cheap chocolates,
if you like caramel. I'm sure that ad launched her singing career, NOT!!!
And if your fave today is the turtle, I'm flatter that you like one of my own photos.
I love turtles, in their natural habitat!! They are old wondrous creatures.
These facial features could inspire many cultures into mask making.
